Girls tennis teamdowns Panthers

The Del Norte High girls tennis team had a strong showing against McKinleyville at home on Saturday morning, winning 9-0. The win improves the Warriors mark in HDN conference play to 3-0 early in the season.

"I'm really happy with how they did," head coach Jane Rumiano said. "The girls have been playing really well."

Emma Wilson, the No. 1 seed for Del Norte defeated Abby Arndt 6-0, 6-4. No. 2 seed Rebecca Cink downed Rachel Marrs 6-0, 6-1. Jennifer Gustafson, the No. 3 seed for the Warriors, defeated Ashley Wickham 6-0. 6-0. No 4. Lauren Golda soundly defeated Meghan Walsh 6-0, 6-0. No. 5 Ashleigh Speaker took down Anna Cabeceria 6-0, 6-0.

In an exhibition match, Speaker defeated Amanda Sanchez 6-0, 6-0.

In doubles play, Wilson and Rebecca Cink defeated Arndt and Marrs 6-2, 6-0. Gustafson and Golda defeated Wickham and Walsh 6-1, 6-0 and Rachel Cink and Kelsy Hintz defeated Cabeceria and Harmon 6-1, 6-0.

Rumiano said she has been impressed with the way the girls have been playing this year and said they have been working hard in both practices and games.

"They have been willing to put in the effort to improve their games," she said.

Today, the Warriors face Eureka at home at 4 p.m.
