The season ended for the Del Norte Grizzlies American Legion team Saturday, as the squad lost to the Eureka Falcons 6-2 at the District Tournament in Fortuna.
"They battled hard, but we couldn't string hits to get runs," head coach Eric Enos said.
The Grizzlies were able to keep up with the Falcons until the fourth with the score at 0-0, Eureka scored four runs. Three of the runs were due to fielding errors, Enos said.
The Grizzlies were unable to mount a comeback and were down 6-0 in the ninth. But Del Norte was able to get two runs on the board in the final inning, which was started by Garrett Standring, who laced a triple. Then Kevin Walsworth hit a home run to make it 6-2.
Enos complimented starting pitcher Zack Hegelmeyer and Michael Young, who came in relief and gave up one hit in a little more than three innings of work. Both played for the Del Norte High junior varsity squad this spring and the Del Norte Babe Ruth All-Star team this summer.
Enos commended his team for playing tough all year despite several ups and downs. A key problem was a lack of pitching, with only two pitchers who had substantial pitching experience.
On Thursday, the Grizzlies lost 5-2 to Eureka, but won its game on Friday against Southern Humboldt 6-4. Del Norte ended the year at 13-17.
In the championship game Saturday afternoon, Eureka fell 3-2 to Northern Humboldt.
