Down, but not out, the Del Norte Grizzlies American Legion team kept their season alive Friday by holding on to a 6-4 victory against Southern Humboldt at the District Tournament in Fortuna.
If they had lost the game, the season would had been over for the 13-16 Grizzlies in the double elimination tournament.
"It was just awesome," head coach Eric Enos said. "They knew what had to be done. We played Del Norte Grizzlies baseball."
If the team plays solid defense and continues to hit well, "we stand a good chance of winning tomorrow," Enos said.
The Grizzlies were coming off a tough 5-2 loss against Eureka on Thursday.
The team committed nine errors for the game on Thursday.
On Friday they committed only one error in the field.
Kevin Walsworth had a strong game for Del Norte, pitching seven solid innings, giving up only six hits and four runs. He also went 3-for-4 from the plate. Justin Yslas went 3-for-4 from the plate with a home run.
Enos said he was quite proud of Trevor Trujillo, who came in in relief of Walsworth in the seventh, as the Grizzlies held on to a 6-4 lead.
Trujillo was able to hold onto the lead, even during the ninth inning, when the bases were loaded with no outs. Trujillo was able to gain a pop out and two strikeouts to secure the win for Del Norte
Enos said it was quite a sight to watch as Trujillo was able to get out of the jam and make sure the team earned the win.
"The exhilaration on his and all the kids' faces was great," Enos said. "They played team baseball today."
The Grizzlies will face either Eureka or Northern Humboldt. The teams played each other late Friday evening.
The Grizzlies game will take place at noon today.
If Del Norte wins that game, they will play for the championship at 3 p.m.
