Former Del Norte Warrior Kelsy Hintz sets the bar high.

Really high.

Last week the San Diego State University junior vanquished 14 feet exactly during a title pole vaulting competition in Albequerque, N.M., setting a new personal best and defeating 14 other contenders to nab her second consecutive victory at the all-Mountain West Indoor Track and Field conference.

Last year she won the same title, but with marks over a foot lower at 12-10.25.

This year the nearest competitor was 1 foot 2.5 inches below Hintz’ winning mark, which is tied for the third-best indoor performance in school history and ranks ninth in the country this season.

Hintz was also selected for the league’s prestigious Indoor Track and Field team, along with four other SDSU students who finished in the top three during the weekend’s events.

Her victory helped the San Diego State Aztecs maintain their lead after two days of the three-day competition.

The team finished in third place.

Hintz was born and raised in Del Norte County and is a 2008 Del Norte High graduate.

She competed all four years in the varsity pole vault, as well as in tennis and volleyball.

She left as one of the most successful and promising athletes in Warrior history.

In her junior and senior years of high school, Hintz took second overall in the pole vault at state for two years running and received a scholarship from SDSU.

The mother of a 2-year-old who is majoring in child and family development, Hintz stays busier than your average college student.

Last year she qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships after taking 12th at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds with a height of 13-03.50.
