The Del Norte High junior varsity baseball team had a strong showing against the Bandon varsity baseball team, splitting a doubleheader on the road on Saturday.
In the first game, the Warriors came back from a six-run deficit but were unable to come up with the win, losing 11-9. In the second game, Del Norte notched the win 9-7, to go to 2-4 for the year.
Head coach John Valdez commended his squad for playing at a high level against a varsity team.
"We played well as a team," he said. "We held our own."
Valdez said he likes the way his team is coming together and how aggressive it played throughout the two games.
"We're coming around," he said.
Standouts for the Warriors included Austin Holt, who played catcher in the second game. In that contest, he went 2-for-3.
"He did everything very well," Valdez said. "I think that was probably his best game of the year."
Holt said it was exciting for the squad to play so well against a varsity team and come away with a win.
"I think we're playing good this year," he said. "We look like a good team."
Because the squad was short on pitchers, varsity team member Joey Yeoman, who normally plays shortstop, pitched four innings and also went 5-for-5 in the second game.
Shane Endemano went 3-for-5 in the first game and was a perfect 4-for-4 in the second contest.
Weather permitting, the Warriors are set to play today in a doubleheader matchup against the Grants Pass, Ore., junior varsity squad.
