The 2013 Del Norte volleyball season came to a close on Wednesday, with a 3-0 (25-13, 24-17, 25-14) loss to Novato in the first round of the North Coast Section Division 3 tournament.

The No. 10 seeded Warriors played hard on the road, but No. 7 Novato was a little too tough for Del Norte.

“They were a much more experienced team than us, and that is what won it I think,” said Del Norte coach Debbie Lorenzi of Novato. “They were able to figure us out on one game, and it took us three games. It was nice that we did though.”

In the third set, after getting used to Novato, Lorenzi thought her team played its best volleyball of the night.

“We started getting more blocks, we started digging more,” Lorenzi said. “We had a lot of rallies with them, it was pretty good volleyball actually. I think it was a very worthwhile trip and a good experience for our girls.”

Junior Kayla Costello led the team with 10 assists and 6 kills. Senior Kaitlyn Clemann also had six kills in the contest.

Sophomore Regin Loftin recorded four kills and senior Ashton Smedley had two while Samantha Lundin provided six assists for Del Norte.

The Warriors season ends with a 23-11 overall record, and a Humboldt-Del Norte Big 5 co-league championship.

“In the beginning of the season, we made some goals,” Lorenzi said. “This team has been dedicated and has worked hard to try to achieve those goals. We played very well at all of the tournaments that we went to, and we went to some big tournaments. We represented Del Norte well everywhere we went this year. I am very happy with them.”
