Move over NBA — another All-Star game hasn’t even started yet.
The Del Norte County Recreation Department Youth Basketball All-Star Game and Medal Ceremony starts at 6 p.m. Wednesday in Thunen Gym at Del Norte High School and is open to the public.
The best players in boys and girls, fifth and sixth grade leagues will square off as a friendly competition to wrap up the season. All youth participants in the league, K through 6th, will receive medals in between games.
The event also serves as an informal introduction to this weekend’s Crescent City Jaycees 44th annual 8th Grade Boys Basketball Tournament.
“It’s a good kick-off; it gets everybody excited,” said John Horner, the county’s recreation coordinator, who is also a coach.
The all-star girls fifth and sixth grade games begin at 6:15 p.m, with the medal ceremony at half-time around 7 p.m. The all-star boys fifth and sixth grade teams will start after the girls.
The all-star players were chosen in collaboration between Horner, the gym supervisors and the coaches. There were around 300 participants in this year’s league.
Horner, who organized the league, gave a “big thanks” to the 50 sponsors of the league, the school district and district’s custodial staff.
“It was huge for the community to rally behind all the youth sports — not just my program,” Horner said. “Without them, none of this is possible.”
