The Del Norte High softball team was all but eliminated from postseason contention by Eureka High Wednesday, as the Loggers swept a doubleheader, 3-2 and 17-1 (five innings), at Del Norte High School.
The Warriors’ record in the Humboldt-Del Norte Big 5 Conference slipped to 5-6 (10-13-1 overall) as Eureka’s HDN Big 5 record improved to 11-0 (17-5-1 overall).
“Our team has a lot of talent, and we have so much potential that we haven’t played up to,” Del Norte senior Marissa Van Dyke said.
In the first game, the Warriors jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Camryn Ridgley. The Loggers responded with three runs in the fifth.
Sami Morrow reached on an error for Del Norte in the seventh inning, and Regin Loftin brought her home with an RBI triple with two outs. Eureka pitcher Lauren Stone induced Ericka Alcala to fly out, ending the game.
The Warriors struck early again in the second game, scoring a run in the top of the first inning but leaving three players on base.
Eureka tied the game in the third inning, then scored seven runs in the fourth and nine in the fifth as the Warriors made numerous errors.
