The Del Norte girls basketball team had multiple things go wrong in the team’s 52-49 loss to Eagle Point on Tuesday, which dropped the team to 5-3 overall this season.
Eagle Point got lucky on five ugly three-point attempts that banked in off the glass, but the rest of the Warriors’ troubles were largely self-inflicted.
“We committed turnovers, missed easy buckets under the basket, we couldn’t remember how to run our basic plays and girls were looking lost, we just did not play well,” said Del Norte head coach Jeff Cook. “The effort wasn’t there.”
The game came on the heels of what Cook described as the worst practice of the year.
“The day before was a horrible practice,” Cook said. “I told the girls that they can’t just turn it on and turn it off.”
Even though the Warriors weren’t playing well, they still kept the game close throughout.
“It still could have gone either way, but we seemed to run out of gas at the end again,” Cook said. “We need to do more conditioning I guess.”
The girls hoped to have better practices this week before they get back out on the floor. Del Norte will head north to Brookings on Friday for a two-day tournament at Brookings-Harbor.
The Warriors will kick off the tournament at 3:30 p.m. against Phoenix. Phoenix finished second at its home tournament last weekend, losing to St. Mary’s, which knocked Del Norte out in the semifinals.
“They have some good three-point shooters,” Cook said. “Right now, every game we have lost has been because of good three-point shooting, so it should be another good match-up.”
