Del Norte girls soccer teams fall to Bruins

The Del Norte High girls soccer team fell in varsity and JV action to Brookings-Harbor at home on Monday.

In the varsity game the Warriors lost to the Bruins 3-0 to drop to 0-2 for the year. Normally, Del Norte does not have a JV team but put one together for this game to give the younger girls more experience. The JV team fell to Brookings 5-2.

Girls soccer coach Clar Byers said that  Tami Plechaty and Katy Suzuki were standouts on defense. “They were all over covering and controlling everything,” Byers said.

In the JV game Del Norte was down only 1-0 at the end of the first half before the Bruins broke the game open with four goals in the second half.

Byers commended Tanasha Santos for her strong play on defense. Carla Garcia and Lyndsay Veerkamp both scored goals for the Warriors.

Del Norte next plays at home on Wednesday at 5 p.m. against St. Bernard’s. The boys team is also playing at home against St. Bernard’s at the same time.

Former Warriors help college team to win

Former Del Norte High football standouts Saxon Schultz and Trevor Rook both played a role for Shasta College in a win on Saturday.

The Knights downed Mendocino College at home in Redding 31-26 to improve to 1-1 for the season.

Schultz, a tight end, led the team with 63 yards receiving on seven receptions and caught a 5-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter.

Rook, a running back, had seven rushes for 30 yards and averaged 4.9 yards per carry.

Both are 2008 graduates of Del Norte and are sophomores at Shasta.

DN girls golf team competes in Fortuna

The Del Norte High girls  golf team competed in a Humboldt-Del Norte Confer­ence meet at the Redwood Golf and Country Club in Fortuna on Monday. Originally, the event on Monday was to be held at the Del Norte Golf Course but was recently switched. The home match will now be on Sept. 28, Warrior head coach Chris Rice said.

Senior Kayla Bohannon  had the top score for Del Norte for the third straight time with a 120. Sophomore Sydney Benson finished with a 122 while Nikki Fugate shot a 128. Kelsi Bomke finished with a score of 132, Shelby Slayton shot a 134 and Madison Vanvalkenburgh shot a 140.

Rice said this was the first time this year three Warrior players shot below a 130 and said he is pleased with the “steady improvement,” the team has shown.

Del Norte next competes on Sept. 22 at the Eureka Municipal Golf Course.

Warriors earn 6-0 win over Mustangs in season opener

The Del Norte High varsity football team pulled off a tough  and gritty 6-0 win over Hidden Valley of Oregon to open the season Friday night.

The score was deceiving as Del Norte controlled the game in all aspects.

The problem was that the Warriors could not get into the end zone despite their fair share of chances. The team finally scored in the fourth quarter.

The Del Norte High girls varsity volleyball team feel in its home opener on Wednesday to Brookings-Harbor in four games.

WHile disappointed with the loss, co-head coach Debbie Lorenzi said the girls need to learn from the loss and move on.

“It was good for us,” Lorenzi said. “ It opens pour eyes to what we need to work on.”

The squad which is seeking its 21st straight conference title this year dropped to 2-2 for the season.

It was the first time in several years they had lost to their over-the-border opponent.This years team is fairly young and features only four seniors and only two starter storm last year.

Things started out well for Del Norte who came out in the first game and missed to by fairly in sync for the most part with some inconsistencies thrown in for good measure After things became  knotted up at 21-21 the Warriors slammed out the remaining points for the 25-21  win.

The Del Norte High girls and boys soccer teams both fell in their season openers to Eureka at home on Wednesday.

The Warrior boys lost 3-0 while the girls fell 5-0.

Boys co-coach A.J. Myer-Zlokovich said the team did not seem in sync and let the Loggers get too many shot chances. He commended goalkeeper Scottie Skeen for his top-notch play.

“He was an animal,” he said, adding that Skeen saved numerous shots on goal and the score would have been much higher without him.

Girls coach Clar Byers commended his team for calming down after giving up three goals in the first half and playing better as the game went on.

The girls have just added a game versus Brookings-Harbor at home. The game is set for 4 p.m on Monday. A junior varsity game will be played at 6 p.m.

The boys next play against St. Bernard’s at home on Wednesday.  The girls also play the Crusaders at home. Both games are at 5 p.m.

DN girls golf team takes 4th at HDNC event

The Del Norte High girls golf team had a solid showing on the links on Wednesday, taking fourth out of eight teams at a Humboldt-Del Norte Conf­erence event at the Beau Pre Golf Course in McKinleyville.

For the second week in a row senior Kayla Bohannon had the top score for the Warriors with a 117.

Sydney Benson finished with a 129 while Nikki Fugate shot a 134. Shelby Slayton finished with a score of 137, as did Jessica Cole and Katie Quick shot a 143.

“I was happy with how we played,” Warrior head coach Chris Rice said. “We will continue to improve.”

Warriors go 2-1 to start season

Place third at Yreka tourney

The Del Norte High varsity volleyball team packed a lot of games into one day to start the season this past weekend.

Playing at a tournament in Yreka on Saturday the Warriors went 2-1 to take third place.

In pool play, which does not count towards the regular season record, Del Norte split sets with Mount Shasta and Yreka and won both sets with Trinity High.

In tournament play, which counts towards the regular season record, the Warriors started out by downing Liberty Christian two games to none.

In the second contest De Norte fell to Central Valley in two games.

A new season awaits the Del Norte high varsity volleyball team starting today.

The squad is taking part in at least four games at a tournament in Yreka, depending on how well they fare.

This season, the Warriors are seeking to earn a remarkable 21st straight league title in the Big 5 Conference.
