The bite for groundfish, including rockcod and lingcod, which opened Thursday, is also strong. Several halibut are also being caught out of Crescent City, including an 86-pounder weighed in at Englund Marine.
Ocean salmon Crescent City
Anglers fishing out of Crescent City are “nailing the salmon,” according to Loren Taylor, of Englund Marine Supply in Crescent City Harbor.
The bite hasn’t always been red hot, but “when you’re in them, you’re in them,” Loren said.
Tally Ho II Sportfishing, Crescent City’s lone charter, brought in five salmon on Monday, including a double hookup and nine on Wednesday, and dozens of other anglers were pulling in their limits of two king salmon per person during the opening week.
Groundfish Crescent City
Tally Ho easily got limits of rockcod and lingcod for a boatload of customers on the opening day of groundfish out of Crescent City, finishing up at 9:30 a.m.
“It’s a good start for the season — the fish were hungry,” said Captain Craig Strickhouser of Tally Ho II Sportfishing.
Brookings ocean fishing
While rockcod and lingcod are holding strong out of the Port of Brookings-Harbor, the salmon bite, which like Crescent City opened last Saturday, is not too hot north of the Oregon-California state line, according to Roland Robertson of Chetco Outdoor Store.
“It’s not as good up here,” Robertson said, adding that the average is only one salmon per boat — at best. “You guys have the bite down there.”
Eureka ocean fishing
Ocean salmon out of Eureka started off good on the first day, according to reports from Reel Steel Fishing, but they had to work to get customers limits for the other two salmon days this week.
The rockfish opener treated Reel Steel right with fast limits of rockfish and lingcod in a few hours.
Clamming in Crescent City
Minus tides drew hoards of clammers to South Beach this week, and the clamming was fantastic, with many people getting limits of razor clams within an hour.
The minus tides will continue through Wednesday.
