The finals of the Del Norte County Recreation Department’s Firecracker Tournament, a one-pitch softball tournament conducted Saturday and Sunday at Pyke Field in Crescent City, are conducted under a double-elimination format. Lose twice and you’re out.

Rob’s Barbershop of Crescent City entered the tournament finals with a loss against their opponent, undefeated Gordi Bros. Rob’s Barbershop staved off elimination with an 18-11 win in the first game, then won 19-16 in the second game to capture the championship trophy.
Rob’s Barbershop held a 9-5 lead after four innings in the first game before Gordi Bros responded with a six-run fifth inning. The Barbershop bats came alive in the top of the sixth inning, as nine runs crossed the plate and helped secure the victory.
Momentum went back and forth in the second game. Trailing 8-6 in the third inning, Rob’s Barbershop exploded for 11 runs, spurred on in part by a three-run triple.
Rob’s Barbershop tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning to lead 19-8. Matt Hill of Gordi Bros hit a grand slam in the sixth inning, but Gordi Bros could not close the gap further.
Brandon Whirry of Rob’s Barbershop was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Dan Gillis of Rob’s Barbershop won the Best Bat award, and Stephen Daniels of Rob’s Barbershop earned Gold Glove honors.
Other all-tournament team selections included Noberto Marques of Rob’s Barbershop and Travis Wright, Brian Carnicello, Chris Poole and Hill, all of Gordi Bros.
