Savages take to the air for season-ending win

The Siskiyou Savages semi-pro football team ended its season on a high note on Saturday, gaining a 49-24 victory over the Umpqua Valley Knights of Roseburg, Ore. The Savages ended the year at 3-5. Playing in only his second game of the year for the Savages, quarterback Blake Moorman, who led Humboldt State to a 9-1 mark last season, was a major reason for the victory. He made an astounding 40 out of 55 passes for 409 yards and five touchdowns. His favorite receiver was Joey Stein, a college teamate. Stein caught 17 passes for 230 yards and three touchdown. He also got into the throwing act, connecting on a 4-yard touchdown pass to Moorman. Walt McClurg scored on a 1-yard rushing touchdown and Josh Jiminez and Brian Carnicello each caught a touchdown pass. "It was a real aerial show," head coach Dick Trone said. The Savages did not punt once in the game. By winning the final two games, Trone said it bodes well for the team next season. He said Moorman and Stein have indicated they would come back to play next year. The contest was played at McKinleyville High because of events at the high schools in Brookings and Crescent City
