Warriors struggle to score in 43-36 loss to Panthers
The Del Norte High girls basketball team continued its recent scoring struggles Tuesday. The Warriors went into McKinleyville and came away with a 43-36 loss to the Panthers.
The Warriors haven’t scored more than 36 points in their last three games. Del Norte head coach Jeff Cook said the Warriors had plenty of open shots, as they have throughout the low-scoring streak.
“We just cannot get the ball in the hoop,” said head coach Jeff Cook. “We are getting great looks, they are just not falling. Whether they are open jump shots or shots in the paint, they just aren’t falling. We have to score more than 30 points to get a win.”
Through the non-conference season, Del Norte regularly scored in the 50s, only dipping below 40 points one time. The Warriors have only scored more than 40 points once in Humboldt-Del Norte play.
Although their offense struggled, the Warriors defense kept them in the game.
One of the bright spots of the game for Del Norte was the play of their reserves. The Warriors got into foul trouble in the second quarter and had to expand their rotation.
“They came in and really kept us in the game,” Cook said of his reserves. “They showed great defense and good extra hustle.”
Cook was especially pleased with the effort from senior guard Ericka Alcala.
“She did an amazing job diving for loose balls and playing defense,” Cook said. “She really stepped up. If everybody else played with that much energy, we may have had a shot.”
The loss drops the Warriors below .500 for the season at 9-10 overall. They currently sit at 0-6 in the HDN Big 5.
The Warriors return home today looking for their first league win of the season against Eureka in Thunen Gymnasium.
Del Norte fell to Eureka in its closest league game of the season so far, a 36-35 loss in Eureka.
The freshman team will start things off at 4:30 p.m. with the junior varsity to follow. The varsity game will start around 7:30 p.m.
