No. 3 DNHS doubles pair makes it to HDNC finalsThe Del Norte High tennis team’s No. 3 doubles pair of Blair Westbrook and Oscar Ko had a strong showing at the Humboldt-Del Norte Conference doubles championships in Arcata on Saturday. They won their first two matches and made it to the finals. Due to time running out, the finals match, against Arcata, will not be played until next month. In No. 1 doubles, Brandon Ford and Daniel Escobedo lost in three sets in the first round to Fortuna. In No. 2 doubles, Thomas Thao and Jesse Lee lost in the semifinals to Arcata. Former DNHS standouts perform well on the trackTwo Del Norte High standouts in track and field performed well over the weekend. Senior Ashley Webster, a 2006 Warrior graduate, competes for Chico State. She took first in the shot put with a throw of 44 feet at the California-Oregon Border Clash in Klamath Falls, Ore. Sophomore Kelsy Hintz, a 2008 Del Norte graduate, competes for San Diego State University. She tied for the fourth best pole vault in school history at the UC San Diego Triton Invitational on Saturday. Hintz cleared 13 feet, 7 1/4 inches and tied for third place. Warriors drop softball games at Yreka tourneyThe Del Norte High softball team dropped two games at a tournament in Yreka on Saturday. Playing Yreka, the Warriors had a 5-1 lead entering the seventh inning. Due to a number of errors, Yreka came back and eventually won the game, 7-6. Del Norte committed seven errors for the contest. Facing Lassen, Del Norte lost 10-4 to drop to 3-8-1 for the season. The Warriors were up 2-1 after one inning, with Lassen putting up five runs in the second inning to break the game open. Head coach Jackie Heuberger said the squad did a good job of hitting the ball and getting on base, with five hits and seven walks. The problem, she said, was errors, with nine committed for the contest. On Friday in Yreka, Del Norte tied Corning 8-8, lost to Etna 2-1 and fell to Westwood 4-3. The Warriors next play fellow Big 5 Conference opponent Eureka on Saturday on the road. The first contest begins at 11 a.m. |
