DN girls golf finishes 4th at Benbow GC Fri.
The Del Norte High School girls golf team opened its season Friday with a Humboldt-Del Norte League tournament at Benbow Valley Golf Course in Eureka, taking fourth place among five teams.
The Warriors combined score of 617 put them behind tournament champion McKinleyville (563), Arcata (585) and Eureka (603). Fortuna (649) finished in fifth place.
Brooke Trujillo was the low woman for Del Norte, carding a 113 on the par-72 golf course. Amber Preston (118) shot the Warriors’ second-lowest score, followed by Sierra Fitzhugh (122), Bailee Jones (129), Hailie Thompson (135) and Morgan Gibson (157).
Eureka’s Ashley Gutierrez was the tournament medalist, shooting a 20-over 92 on the day.
Del Norte will play Wednesday in a Humboldt-Del Norte League tournament at Beau Pre Golf Course in McKinleyville.
DN-Healdsburg game to be played on Ch. 4
Charter Cable Channel 4 will broadcast the Del Norte Warriors’ football game at Healdsburg High at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, after “Warrior Sports with Mattz and McKeown.”
Hoffman (TD, 115 rec. yds.), Cougars win Sat.
BYU wide receiver and Del Norte High grad Cody Hoffman had seven catches for 115 yards and a 37-yard touchdown reception as the No. 25 Cougars defeated Weber State, 45-13, on Saturday in Provo, Utah.
BYU received 110 points in the Associated Press Top 25 poll on Monday, holding steady at No. 25. Week 4 opponent Boise State is the first team off the list, with 106 points.
The Cougars will play Utah in the Holy War on Saturday night at 7 p.m. in a game broadcast on ESPN2.
Wild River, Strokers win rec softball titles
Wild River scored 14 runs in the first three innings of the Del Norte County Recreation Department Co-Ed Upper Division softball championship on Sept. 4, defeating Nat Pak 20-5 to take home the championship trophy.
In the Co-Ed Lower Division championship, the Strokers beat Stick To The Plan, 14-9, on Sept. 4.
Lumberjacks defeat Azusa Pacific Saturday
Humboldt State raced out to a 28-7 halftime lead on Azusa Pacific as the Lumberjacks toppled the Cougars, 45-17, for their first Great Northwest Athletic Conference win of the season on Saturday in Arcata.
Humboldt running back Nick Ricciardulli carried the football 28 times for 108 yards and two touchdowns. Defensively, Jerry Maluia recovered a fumble for a touchdown and intercepted a pass, and linebacker Colton Russi racked up 15 tackles for the Lumberjacks (2-0 overall).
Azusa Pacific, now 0-2, joined the NCAA Division II GNAC this season after spending 47 years as an independent in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.
Humboldt State will play Simon Fraser University on Saturday at 6 p.m. in Arcata.
Tsunami Sirens host final home bout Fri.
The Tsunami Sirens roller derby team is hosting its final home bout — “Back to Xchool” — of the 2012 season on Saturday, Sept. 15, at the Del Norte County Fairgrounds. The Sirens’ opponent is the Peninsula Rollergirls of Redwood City.
The Sirens were scheduled to participate in a road bout on Aug. 25 against the Redding Rollergirls, which was canceled due to wildfire evacuation in the Redding area. They bring a 3-3 record into the Peninsula bout, having lost their last bout to Shasta Roller Derby, 149-77, on July 14.
Doors open at 5:30 p.m.; the bout will begin at 6:30 p.m. Tickets cost $15 and can be purchased at the following locations in advance of the bout:

DNLL meeting set
Del Norte Little League is holding its year-end board meeting on Monday, Sept. 17, at 6 p.m. at Mary Peacock Elementary School.
Year-end business, board member appointments and 2013 goals will be addressed. The general public is invited to attend.
