DN girls golf takes third at Redwood G&CC Fri.
The Del Norte High girls golf team recorded its best team finish of the year on Monday, taking third place with a combined stroke total of 613 at the par-72 Redwood Empire Golf & Country Club in Eureka.
McKinleyville won its third consecutive Humboldt-Del Norte League meet, posting a combined score of 529. Arcata (566) took second place; Fortuna (620) and Eureka (626) finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
Warriors freshman Sierra Fitzhugh took ninth place with a score of 111. She was joined in the one-day tournament’s top 16 by teammates Brooke Trujillo (tied for 12th, 122), Amber Preston (tied for 12th, 122) and Bailee Jones (16th, 125).
Also competing for Del Norte were Taylor Shanley (133), Alicia Fender (162), Morgan Gibson (162), Haylee Hardy (162) and Hailie Thompson (162).
The Warriors return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 26, at noon for an HDN tournament at Eureka Municipal Golf Course.
Del Norte cross country competes at Fortuna
Del Norte High’s cross country team began its season on Tuesday afternoon at the Humboldt-Del Norte League meet at Newburg Park in Fortuna.
Patrick White was the Warriors’ top finisher in the boys’ 5,000-meter race, crossing the line in 15th overall. (Race times were unavailable.) Steven Vance (24th place), Cameron Cain (41st), Joey Godla (43rd) and Marcus Henderson (44th) rounded out the Del Norte top five.
Kyle Cleland (47th place), Nicholas Jacob (52nd), Jordan Ridgley (58th), Matthew Pimentel (59th) and Gunner Gustafson (63rd) also competed for the Warriors.
Samantha Henkell, Del Norte’s lone female cross country runner, finished the girls’ 5,000-meter race in 30:29, good for 26th place overall.
“Samantha ran well for her first race,” Warriors assistant coach George Hartman said.
Del Norte will travel to South Fork High in Miranda for its next cross country meet Tuesday at 4 p.m.
