DN Warrior girls tennis team downs Crusaders

The Del Norte High Warriors  girls tennis team defeated the St. Bernard’s Crusaders of Eureka 8-1 at home on Tuesday in Humboldt-Del Norte Conference action.

The win broke a two-game losing streak as Del Norte improved to 3-2 for the year, as all six singles seeds won.

“Today, everyone played excellent in their singles matches,” Del Norte head coach Sara Miller said. “Overall, this was definitely a positive change from last week’s losses and hopefully our team can keep the momentum going.”

In No. 1 singles, Kathryn Gustafson downed Maricela Resendez 6-1, 6-1. No. 2 singles player Sam Bausch defeated Alyssa Johnson 6-4, 6-2. No. 3 singles player Jordan Babich downed Amelia Wang 6-0, 6-0.

In No. 4 singles, Taylor Cleland defeated Vicky Huang 6-0, 6-0. In No. 5 singles Riley Sheets downed Alice Chen, 6-4, 6-1.

In No. 6 singles, Alexis Wright defeated Kenda Petrusha 6-0, 6-3.

In No. 1 doubles, Bausch and Cleland lost 8-6. In No. 2 doubles Gustafson and Babich won 8-1 and in No. 3 doubles Riley and Wright won 8-3.

Del Norte next plays on Saturday at home against McKinleyville starting at 10 a.m.

 

DN cross country team takes part in Arcata meet

 

The Del Norte High cross country team took part in a Humboldt-Del Norte Conference meet in Arcata on Tuesday.

For the boys, the top placer was Patrick White, who came in 19th. Other Warriors who competed included Marcus Henderson, who was 40th, and Hawk Mattz, who came in 51st.

 For the girls, Crystal Clower was 51st, Sabrina Bustamante was 53rd and Sunny Athey was 66th.

Del Norte will next compete in its only home event of the year on Tuesday. It begins at the Del Norte Golf Course at 4 p.m.


Swim club to host an open house tonight

The Crescent City Swim Club will be having an open house tonight from 6 to 7 p.m. at Fred Endert Municipal Pool.

The Crescent City Swim Club is open to all level of swimmers ages 5 through 18 years-old. Swimmers need to bring a parent or responsible adult and a swimsuit.

 The swim club currently swims Monday though Thursday from 6 to 7 p.m. Dues are $50 per month plus a yearly registration fee of $60, which is good for 2011 and 2012.

Swimmers choose which nights they want to swim, all practices are not mandatory. For more information please call Tammy at 465-6868.

 

WR Hoffman receives national football honors

 

Former Del Norte Warrior Cody Hoffman was honored for his game-changing play for BYU on Friday night.

The BYU sophomore wideout and kick returner  was named the National Kickoff Returner Performer of the Week by the College Football Performance Awards.  He also was named the FBS Independent special teams player of the week.

Hoffman had 129 yards on two kickoff returns. The second was a 93-yard game-tying touchdown in BYU’s 24-17 home win over Central Florida.

The Cougars next face Utah State at home on Friday night in Provo.
