DN grapplers head to McKinleyville

The Del Norte wrestling team will head south to McKinleyville on Saturday for its second tournament of the season.

The Warriors will have another chance to wrestle every kid on the team in McKinleyville, one of three tournaments for Del Norte with such an opportunity throughout the season.

“It will be roughly the same style of competition (as the Battle at the Border last week),” said Del Norte head coach Aaron Schaad. “I look forward to adjusting what we did wrong, building on what we did right and watching it over the weekend to see how it progresses.”

Warrior soccer White Star winners

The Del Norte high school boys and girls soccer teams held a season-ending awards banquet in November at Wild Rivers Pizza in Brookings.

Girls head coach Clar Byers awarded Kira Standring the White Star for the girls team. Boys coach David Sanyaolu awarded the White Star to the boys leading scorer, Jesus Herrera.

The rest of the boys and girls varsity soccer players also received their varsity letters and certificates at the banquet.

Registration open for youth basketball

The Del Norte County Recreation Department is looking for players to compete in the 2013-14 Youth Basketball League. The league consists of kids 5 years old up to sixth grade. It is broken up into four age divisions.

The league is designed to teach the fundamentals of basketball to kids while stressing participation. Each child will play. The registration deadline is Dec. 13, with a $30 fee required.
