DN wrestlers head to separate tourneys

The Del Norte wrestling team is splitting ways this weekend. The Warriors will take their strongest wrestlers south to Santa Rosa for the Maria Carillo Tournament on Saturday.

The Maria Carillo Tournament will be possibly the toughest tournament that Del Norte has wrestled in this season.

“It is one of the better one-day tounaments in the section,” said Del Norte head coach Aaron Schaad. “We will see a lot of section-caliber kids there, so we will see where we are at. Generally, the top four at that tournament have a pretty good shot of placing at sections.”

The rest of the wrestlers will stay a couple hours closer to home, wrestling at a tournament in Willits.

“They will go to Willits just for experience and more matches than just two,” Schaad said. “Some of the kids I don’t think are quite ready for that step. You want to put a kid in there, but reality says, ‘Lets just wait.’ There is really no sense in just getting dominated. They will be able to get in there, mix it around, get some offense going and get some counters.”

Warrior girls fall 34-26 in Arcata

The Del Norte girls basketball team dropped its second game of the season against Arcata on Thursday, falling 34-26 on the road.

The Warriors did a good job of defending the reigning Humboldt-Del Norte player of the year, Lauren McCoy. McCoy scored just 7 points on 2-of-9 shooting.

Tigers freshman Vanessa Holland picked up the slack, however, getting to the free throw line for 10 of her game-high 19 points.

With the loss, Del Norte falls to 9-9 overall this season and sits at 0-5 in the H-DN Big 5. The Warriors will be back on the court Tuesday when they travel to McKinleyville.
