Tennis loses close one

“It could have gone our way, but it didn’t.”

That’s how Del Norte High girls tennis coach Jane Rumiano described “a very close, exciting match” against Eureka in Crescent City on Thursday.

Rumiano praised the performances of several Warriors, including No. 1 singles player Jordan Babich, who defeated Breann Davis, 7-5, 6-4.

“Jordan played a very steady match, using her slice in the terrific wind to her advantage and being very aggressive, forcing her opponent to make errors that cost her the match,” Rumiano said.

No. 2 player Debbie Yang beat Lilly Copeland, 7-5, 6-1.

“Debbie used a different approach, frustrating her opponent by moving her all over the court until she created an opportunity to hit a winner,” Rumiano said.

No. 3 Alexis Wright lost 2-6, 0-6, while No. 4 Raili Makela defeated Ariana Rutledge, 6-1, 7-6 (3).

“Raili used her hard, flat serve to set up opportunities at the net, and her determination to win gave her the match in the second set tiebreaker,” Rumiano said.

No. 5 Panhia Yang lost to Natalie Moore, 6-8, while No. 6 Marine Henry was defeated by Morgan Dailey, 1-8.

In doubles, the No. 1 team of Babich/Wright lost to Davis/Copeland, 6-8, while the No. 2 team of Yang/Yang won 8-6.

“Debbie and Panhia (Yang)did a great job of covering the whole court and creating opportunities for each of them to hit winners,” Rumiano said.

The No. 3 team of Makela/Henry lost 4-8, and in an exhibition match Del Norte’s Olivia Jeffcoat and Dakota Griffin lost 6-8.

“The doubles matches were the highlight of the day, with very good tennis being played on both sides of the net,” Rumiano said.

Overall, the coach said she was encouraged despite the loss.

“I like the transition that I’m seeing,” Rumiano said. “The girls have had a team-wide change of attitude. Instead of being afraid to lose, they are determined to win, and they’re willing to put the time in to develop strategies to make that happen.”

Del Norte’s next match is Tuesday at Arcata.
