Members and coaches of the Razors Women’s Indoor Soccer team after winning the title on Sunday night. Submitted photo The Razors are the new champions of the Del Norte Women’s Indoor Soccer League after several close games and two shootouts Sunday night.
In a surprising twist, the top two teams were eliminated during the semi-finals. The Gordi Bras lost to the fifth-ranked Razors in a shootout after a scoreless game. The Razors ended up winning 2-0, which put them in the championship game.
“It was a really physical game and it was tough to lose like that, but I’m proud of my girls and I’m looking forward to next season,” said Gordi Bras player Kristie Gavin.
Eye Candy, ranked third, also advanced to the championship game after
beating the Nail Genies 2-1, who were in second place heading into the
playoffs.
Immediately following their loss, the Nail Genies played the Gordi Bras for third place. The Gordi Bras won 3-1.
After two tough losses, Nail Genies player Julie Jo Ayer Williams had
nothing but encouraging words about her teammates. “I had fun with all
the girls. We had a great season and had very few goals scored against
us. We lucked out with a natural goal keeper, Hannah Brown, who had
never played soccer before, and her background in water polo was helpful
as she did a tremendous job all season.”
The championship game also went scoreless during regular play, and
the Razors won their second shootout of the night, beating Eye Candy
1-0.
Deleana Saylor, goalie for the Razors, shut down the Gordi Bras and
Eye Candy during both shootouts to help her team win the league
championship.
“We were kind of the underdogs but we were able to come through in
the playoffs. We just played well as a team,” said Razors player
Chantele Rilatos.
The playoffs highlighted the competitiveness of the league and proved that no team was safe from elimination.
“The intense matches during the playoffs were a testament of improved
skills and desire to win even though it’s just a rec league,” said
Williams.
