Inconsistent serving dooms Warriors in 8-1 loss to Arcata Tigers

The Del Norte High boys tennis team had another tough battle on Tuesday as Arcata came to Crescent City and beat the Warriors 8-1.

The Warriors were able to win at least one game in every singles match of the day, but the Tigers proved too strong in the end.

“I thought we played well, but they have to work on getting our second serves in,” Del Norte head coach Jeff Cook said. “That really killed us.”

Lyndon Yang and Sam Crisler were especially hampered by serving in their singles matches. Yang went on to fall 8-1 to Arcata’s Nash Karp and Crisler lost by an identical 8-1 score to CJ Gray.

When Yang and Crisler teamed up for No. 3 doubles, in what ended up being the final match of the day, they topped Karp and Gray 8-4 to put Del Norte on the scoreboard.

“They lost to them in singles, but they felt like they could take them,” Cook said. “They knew they had a chance to win in singles, so playing doubles gave them another chance to get at it. They were saying that they did a good job of covering each other’s mistakes. They worked well together.”

The Warriors are still learning the game, with five of the seven players on the roster never having played tennis competitively prior to this spring. Cook said they will also need to be more patient as they continue to learn the game.

“We are getting frustrated sometimes,” Cook said. “When they make a mistake, they don’t forget it, they keep thinking about it and that leads to unforced errors.”

Del Norte will hit the road Saturday for a meet against Ferndale.
