Top two teams face off in women’s soccer

The Gordi Bras and the Nail Genies, the top two teams of the Del Norte County Women’s Indoor Soccer League, battled for the No. 1 seed in the playoffs, which start next week.

Gordi Bras came out quick with three goals in the first half and ultimately shut out the Nail Genies, 3-0.

“The Nail Genies are hard to beat, but we passed really well and got a couple of early goals,” said Sara Haug, who scored the second goal for Gordi Bras.

Haug injured her knee in the first half, just one of many injuries during an intense finish to regular season play. Her team was already shorthanded for subs.

“That’s going to affect us bad,” said Gordi Bras coach Jorge Gonzalez of Haug’s injury. “She’s a big part of our offense.”

The Nail Genies were missing their best defender to a case of the chickenpox, said Sarah Baumann of the Nail Genies.

“We played a damn good game, it just happens that we lost,” Baumann said. “We have players of all abilities and everybody gave it their all.”

Following the loss to Gordi Bras, Nail Genies played a hard match against Eye Candy, but the ball never found the goal for either team.

With time running down late in the second half, the Nail Genies took shot after shot, but Eye Candy blocked every attempt. The game ended 0-0.

The Razors beat the Uzzies 2-0.

Gordi Bras also played the She Devils, winning 5-0.

Playoffs start next Sunday at 5 p.m. at the Del Norte County Fairgrounds.

4th: Uzzies (3-3-2, but with 2 few goals than Eye Candy

5th: Razors  (3-4-1)

6th: She-Devils  (3-5-0)

7th: Black Widows (0-7-1)
