Del Norte will get a final taste of roller derby mayhem today as the North Coast Tsunami Sirens compete in the last home bout of the season.

The Sirens will take on Flood Water Roller Derby of Rocklin, Calif. at 6:30 p.m. today at the Del Norte County Fairgrounds. Tickets cost $15 and may be purchased at the door; doors open to spectators at 5:30 p.m. A portion of the ticket proceeds will be donated to the Del Norte High dance program, said Siren Adrianna “Full Metal Jackie” Stefko.

Tonight’s bout is the culmination of a roller-coaster season with losses to Red Bluff’s Derby Girls in May and to Humboldt Roller Derby in an overtime thriller, and a victorious rematch against Red Bluff.

The Sirens started the season in February with a roster made up of about half veteran skaters and the rest newbies, Stefko said. Last year, pregnancies and injuries on and off the track took a handful of skaters out of the game, she said. This year, pregnancies took two players out of the game, Stefko said.

“It’s strange, just when we get really strong we drop off a little bit,” she said. “I think we’re always trying to grow and trying to figure out where we sit in as far as ranking (goes).”

Many teams, such as Humboldt Roller Derby, are affiliated with the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association, Stefko said. She said she doesn’t think the Sirens have enough consistent skaters to pursue a national ranking.

“We’re trying hard,” she said. “Some of our new people are really showing potential. We’ve been working on some new teamwork drills and I’d love to see some of the stuff we’ve been working really hard at manifest on the track.”

In addition to today’s bout, the Sirens are holding a boot camp Tuesday for newbies who want to join. For more information, visit www.northcoastrollerderby.com.
