The Del Norte High volleyball team crammed in a lot of games on Saturday.

Taking part in a 10-team tournament in Yreka, the Warriors came out with a third place finish.

The junior varsity team also fared well, taking second at the JV tournament in Yreka.

Head varsity coach Meagan Curtis said the tournament was a great team building experience that gave the squad a chance to see a variety of different team and styles, which is vital early in the season.

"It was good to test our endurance," she said, adding the team began play at 9:30 a.m. and played in matches until past 7 p.m. "It really tells you if your team is ready to do what they have to do."

She added that overall, she was pleased with her team's tenacity and coming back from a few sluggish games to claim third.

The Warriors opened up play this season on Wednesday, downing Brookings-Harbor in five matches at home.

On Saturday, Del Norte defeated Etna 25-23 and 25-19. The Warriors tied Saint Mary's losing 18-25 and winning 25-23 and lost to enventual tourney champion Hidden Valley, Ore., who won 23-25 and 25-12. On Sep. 20, Del Norte will face Hidden Valley at home. The Warriors defeated Yreka 25-23, 25-23 and downed Trinity 25-9 and 25-18.

In the semifinals, the Warriors faced Cascade Christian, while losing in three sets to them 21-25, 25-23, and 14-15.

Curtis said she was proud of her team's composure.

Also, the other team did a lot of talking on the court, and Curtis said her team was able to maintain its composure and just play the game and not get distracted by the trash talk.

Junior Ashley Owen was named to the all-tournament team.

"She hit the ball really well," Curtis said, adding she dominated many matches with her play.

On the JV side, Kristen Debacker was named to the all tournament JV team.

On Thursday, the Warriors will have a rematch against Brookings on the road. The JV match is set for 5:30 p.m. and varsity will play after 6:30 p.m.
