The Del Norte High volleyball team did enough to earn its fourth victory in a row, but the Warriors were hoping for a stronger showing in their 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-14) victory at home over Fortuna on Thursday.

“We didn’t play to our potential at all,” said Del Norte co-head coach Pablo Lorenzi. “I don’t think they came prepared to play. We played good enough to get by, a win is a win, we just need to come in with the right attitude. We thought we would just walk in and win.”
The Warriors (17-7, 4-0 Humboldt-Del Norte Big 5) held the lead for most of the first set, but every time they looked poised to pull away from Fortuna (6-13, 1-2 H-DN Big 5), the Huskies would make a run to get back into the game.
The Warriors pulled ahead 12-6 early in the first set, but Fortuna battled back to tie the game at 16. Del Norte couldn’t regain any breathing room, never again leading by more than three, but the Warriors pulled out the 25-23 set victory.
The second set was more of the same for Del Norte. The Huskies were able to build up a lead early in the set, up by at many as three points at 12-9. The Warriors slowly climbed back into the lead, however, tying the game at 17 and pulling ahead for a 25-22 win.
“We did some good things, but then we would fall apart,” Lorenzi said. “We have a lot of stuff to work on, and a lot of it isn’t physical. A lot of it is mental.”
In the third set, the Warriors and Huskies started on fairly even footing. After trailing 5-7, however, Del Norte went on a 17-3 run that put the set and the match out of Fortuna’s reach.
“I think we started to pick up and play our game,” Lorenzi said. “Things happened a little bit more. We opened up the gaps.”
Once again, senior left side hitter Kaitlyn Clemann was strong at the net, recording 17 kills in the match. Senior middle Ashton Smedley added eight kills for the Warriors.
Junior Kayla Costello recorded 16 assists in the match and junior Samantha Lundin dished out 10 more.
Senior Erika Alcala led the Del Norte defense with 14 digs and sophomore Regin Loftin chipped in 10.
Both Alcala and Smedley also recorded a pair of aces in the match.
The volleyball team will head north to Coos Bay, Ore. this weekend for the Marshfield Tournament on Saturday.
