Mike Mitola, a 1958 Warrior graduate, was another multi-sport athlete that I really
enjoyed watching. Mike played football, basketball, baseball and golf.
The 1957 football team that Mike played for as a senior had two players who were teammates of Mike that several years later would become assistant coaches working with me during my head football coaching career.
One was Matt Kelley, who went on to an outstanding career at Humboldt State, joined me in Yucca Valley and helped take a Yucca Valley Trojan team to a CIF section championship game. The other was Bill Sullivan, who went on to a great football career at Oregon State and became my assistant coach when I returned to Del Norte.
As I look back now, that must have added to my enjoyment even though I didn’t
realize it. Mike Mitola’s athletic ability earned him a spot on the Warrior varsity football team as a sophomore. He was an outstanding end playing for legendary Warrior coach Tex Gatlin, and as a senior received All League honors for his play on the gridiron.
Mike would go from the football field to the gym, where he made the Warrior varsity basketball team as a freshman. As a sophomore he played on a Warrior team that finished second in the Humboldt Del Norte league. In his senior year he also received All League honors for his basketball play.
When basketball was over, he took his talents to the baseball diamond, where he played for Hall of Fame coach Wally Maciel.
With golf just getting started Mike was also able to spend some time on the golf course.
Mike was also an active member of the “D” Club.
Mike was an athlete that older Warrior fans can look back on with many happy memories. I know how much I enjoyed being a Warrior fan that long ago.
Dick Trone writes on his reflections and the history of Del Norte High sports. He played football for the Warriors and graduated in 1951, later serving as the school’s football coach for a number of years.
