Warrior Memories: Great coaches to be inducted in Hall of Fame

I have just returned from a great vacation in the state of Washington.

We feasted on fresh oysters from the Hood Canal and played with the great grandkids. It was fun, but now it’s back to the fun things here in this great county.

It was special when I found that this year’s Del Norte High School Athletic Hall of Fame class is honoring three coaches who have been a very special part of my life.

The first is Ed Frasier. Many old-timers from Crescent City will remember Ed as the owner of Frasier Insurance. I remember him as Coach Frasier. Ed took over as head coach for the Warriors in the 1920s, and for the next 19 years coached football, basketball, and baseball.

When Ed gave up his position at Del Norte High he went over to Crescent Elk and coached the boys basketball team. It was at Crescent Elk that I had the privilege of playing for Coach Fraiser.

Things that I learned from Ed had a big effect on my career when I became  a coach. He taught me not only how to be a better player but more importantly how to be a better person.

The second inductee is Wally Maciel. Wally is probably most remembered for his basketball and baseball coaching, but at times he also helped in the football program. Wally spent his entire teaching career at Del Norte.

I first got to know Wally when he was playing baseball for the old Crescent City Merchants team, on which he was an outstanding pitcher and shortstop. I also had the experience of facing Wally when he was pitching for the Humboldt State Lumberjacks and I was playing for the Humboldt Del Norte League All Stars team, after my senior baseball season.

His memory is better than mine because he often reminds me that he struck me out on three straight pitches. When you talk to players who played for Coach Maciel you can really feel the respect they have for him.

The third is Coach Dale Thomas. Dale came to Del Norte after graduating from Humboldt State in the 1950s. He coached in both the football and basketball programs, serving at the time as the head coach in both. Dale, like Wally Maciel, spent his entire teaching career as a Warrior.

Dale is supposed to be retired, but still volunteers his time working with coach Kirk Burrows in the basketball program. He was Kirk’s assistant when the Warriors won the Section Championship in 2002 and now works with Kirk coaching the boys freshman team, which this year had an undefeated  season. Dale also had an undefeated football season when he was head junior varsity coach.

This group of Warriors will be inducted at halftime of the football game Aug. 24. I hope to see lots of you there.

Dick Trone writes on his reflections and the history of Del Norte High Warrior sports. Trone, who played football for the Warriors and graduated in 1951, had an illustrious career on the gridiron at Humboldt State University. Trone was football head coach at Del Norte High for a number of years before retiring.
