Warrior Memories: Kevin Thomas had a stellar senior year for Del Norte

Kevin Thomas, a 1975 Del Norte graduate, had a senior year on the Warrior sports scene that was really outstanding. Kevin is the son of Hall of Fame Warrior coach Dale Thomas and wife Arlis.

Through his entire high school career, Kevin performed for the Warriors in football, basketball and golf, but it is his senior year that fans find hard to forget. Playing for coach Jim Costello, who was in his first season at Del Norte, Kevin made first team all Humboldt Del Norte League as a wide receiver.

In one game when the Warriors defeated a tough Arcata Tiger team 21-14, Kevin caught 15 passes for 196 yards. He was also an outstanding defensive back and very good at returning kicks.

When football season ended, he would head for Thunen Gym, where he was again an all-league player. Playing for coach Dick Dowling, Kevin helped the Warriors to their second straight league championship and an overall season record of 20-10.

In one critical game against the Eureka Loggers with the game on the line, the ball was put in Kevin’s hands for a game-winning shot, which he made.

After basketball ended, Kevin picked up his golf clubs and headed for the greens. Under the guidance of golf coach Chuck Blackburn, the Warriors won the first Humboldt Del Norte League championship. They overtook the leading Eureka Loggers in the last tourney of the year by two strokes, finishing the league season 1,096 to 1,098.

Kevin was the top Warrior, finishing second overall in the league. Kevin was joined by fellow senior Warrior Dan Severson, who finished fourth in the league, and freshman Marty Maciel, who ended up fifth overall. Marty, son of Hall of Famer Wally Maciel, was completing the first leg of what would be a four-year White Star run in golf.

After graduation Kevin went to Butte Junior College, where he played a year of football and two years of golf.

Dick Trone writes on his reflections and the history of Del Norte High sports as a former player, coach, athletic directer and a lifelong fan.
