Warrior Memories: Not all great Warriors were coaches or athletes

Any former Warrior athlete that drives down North Bank Road past Ruby VanDeventer Park can’t help but remember all the contributions that this wonderful teacher made to Del Norte High School sports.

Most Del Norters look back at Ruby for her work identifying our wildflowers but she taught civics and foreign language at Del Norte for many years. She came to Del Norte from the University of California Berkeley where she was a Bear fan and immediately became a Warrior fan.

While Ruby was never a coach she was a very active supporter of Warrior athletics. Del Norte had an athletic letterman’s club that was very active. Ruby took over as club advisor and did much to help raise funds to support Warrior sports.

Her position as “D” Club adviser had a real effect on my Warrior career. In the second semester of my senior year I was elected president of the “D” Club. I knew nothing about conducting a meeting and was shy in front of a group.

Ruby took me under her wing and really helped me develop confidence in the position. What she taught me really helped me when I went on to Humboldt State.

In the 1950s the Lumberjacks also had a very active athletic letterman’s club. It was one of the most active and influential groups on campus.

During my senior year I had the honor of being elected president of this group. It was a great experience for me, but without all the help I had from Ruby while in high school I would have been a bust in the position.

I never really had a chance to say thank you to this great Warrior teacher, but I never pass Ruby VanDeventer Park without a long delayed thank you. She was a great Warrior and teacher.
