Warrior Memories: Track team provides fun in the spring sun

Spring is here with all the sports that come with it. There is girls softball, boys baseball, tennis and golf, and boys and girls track.

With all these activities under way it was great to hear of the great turnout for track.

While talking to George Hartman, who is an assistant of head coach Sam Escobar. George indicated that there were over 85 boys and girls out for the team. This is great since track is a sport where you don’t have to make cuts, so everyone has a chance to compete.

This made me look back a few years which is always fun to do:

The 1975 girls varsity track team won their 11th-straight Humboldt Del Norte League Championship.

They were undefeated in league meets, winning all contests by 70 or more points. In the league finals the girls won 10 of the final events.

A few of the outstanding performances were Sherri Quinlivan, who won the mile, Kelly Parton, who won the 100 yard dash with an excellent 11.4, and Meilene Darrow, who cleared the high jump bar at 5-foot-3.

At the section meet the Warriors 440 relay team missed qualifying for the State Finals by a tenth of a second. This completed another great year for the girls.

While the boys did not fare as well as the girls, they still had a good season and excellent performances by Rob Wakefield with a 44’10” triple jump and advanced to section finals along with Glen Barland, who posted a 4.314 mile time.

With the great turnout of boys and girls this spring I am looking forward to time in the sunshine at Mike Whalen Field to watch this year’s group of Warriors excite the fans.

Dick Trone writes on his reflections and the history of Del Norte High sports.
