YREKA The Del Norte High boys varsity basketball team looked sharp at a tournament in Yreka, winning the tourney crown on Saturday.
The Warriors downed Brookings 52-32 in the championship and were up 30-11 at the half.
Head coach Blaine Lopez said the team did an "excellent" job of playing defense and rebounding in the game.
He added he is pleased with the way his team is coming together, despite limited time getting ready for the three- game tourney, which began on Thursday. Del Norte defeated Pierce of Arbuckle 70-21 on Thursday and downed host team Yreka 59-48 on Friday.
The Warriors had only three whole practices as a complete team due to several players and Lopez being involved with the football team, which went deep in the North Coast Section playoffs.
In the Brookings game, senior Cliff Van Hook scored 17 points and junior Cody Hoffman had 13.
Hoffman was named to the all-tournament team and Van Hook was named the tournament's most valuable offensive player. Senior Chad Freeman was named defensive MVP and senior Saxon Schultz was named to the all-tourney squad.
Today, the Warriors open up its own tournamentThe Rotary Warrior Classic against fellow Big 5 member Fortuna at 5:30 p.m. at Thunen Gym.
Lopez said the Huskies bring in a new head coach and style this year, so the Del Norte coaching staff does not know much about them.
He added the game will be a valuable tool to give them experience against a conference opponent and gain a better feel for the Huskies when the Big 5 season starts.
The tournament continues on Thursday with Del Norte facing St. Bernard's at 7 p.m. The Del Norte junior varsity squad plays Hidden Valley, Ore., at 5:30 p.m. and the freshman team plays Hidden Valley at 8:30 p.m.
The varsity team concludes the tournament on Saturday with two games, including a rematch against Brookings.
