The Del Norte girls basketball team turned things around on Saturday with a 56-45 victory over Cascade Christian in the consolation final of the Brookings-Harbor Tournament.
The Warriors, who were coming off of their first back-to-back losses of the season, were pleased to be able to head into winter break with a victory.
“It was good to get the win,” said Del Norte head coach Jeff Cook. “We went into the game at ease. I don’t think they were too worried about the previous two games.”
Del Norte started the game slowly, falling behind by six points in the first half. The Warriors caught fire in the third quarter, however, scoring 17 points and grabbing the lead. They put up 16 more points in the fourth quarter to secure the win.
“We took better shots, played better defense, we just played better all around in the second half after we made a few adjustments,” Cook said.
The Warriors were led offensively by the junior duo of Jordan Babich and Grace Bruschi, who scored 15 and 14 points, respectively.
Cook was especially impressed with the way Babich ran the floor during fast breaks, getting open for several layups in the second half.
Kaitlyn Clemann pulled down a team-high 12 rebounds in the contest.
Overall, Cook credited the defense, which held Cascade Christian to just 15 points in the second half, for the final result.
The win improves the Warriors’ record to 6-4. They will take a couple weeks off over the holidays, resuming games at the Bandon Tournament on Jan. 3-4.
League play starts for Del Norte the following week on Jan. 10 at home against Arcata.
