The Del Norte girls struggled to score the basketball once again when they traveled to Fortuna on Friday. Fortuna pulled away during a second quarter in which the Warriors scored just one point and went on for a 47-32 victory.
“We tried some different things, we just couldn’t get it in the basket again,” said head coach Jeff Cook. “Three games of only scoring 30 points isn’t going to win you any games in this league.”
Del Norte got out to a solid start, trailing 12-10 at the end of the first quarter. The Warriors went cold in the second quarter, however, and didn’t score their 12th point until the second half.
In the third quarter, Del Norte cut the Fortuna lead back to six points, but the Warriors were never able to get any closer.
“We didn’t really take the shots at the end when we needed to. We had some open shots, but we decided to make that extra pass and it just didn’t work in our favor.”
Del Norte played without junior forward Jordan Babich, who was out sick. Junior guard Kayla Costello was also feeling under the weather, but played anyway.
“She was hurting,” Cook said. “I was glad she tried to play and she did a good job on defense, but I could tell she was struggling.”
Sophomore Regin Loftin led Del Norte with 13 points and junior Grace Bruschi added 11 for the Warriors.
Regin 13, Bruschi 11, Panhia 4, Clemanns 3, Costello 1 (in second)
“We know who we play, we know what they do, we just have to keep working on what we were working on all week — our shooting and our defense.”
