Warrior girls fall to Eureka by 28 at home

Remain winless in Big Five play

The Del Norte Warriors girls varsity basketball teams struggled in a 60-32 loss to Big 5 Conference rival Eureka at home Wednesday night.

Del Norte appeared out of sync from the start of the contest and  never were really in the game.

“We were out-hustled,” Del Norte head coach Buzz McCulloch said. “They didn’t come out fired up for the game.”

Junior Emma Card led Del Norte scorers with 14 points. Junior Brittany Maready had 10 points for Del Norte. Maready, the leading scorer for the Warriors’ last year, returned last week against McKinleyville but did not score. She had been out since the second game of the season due to a knee injury.

To start the game the Loggers came out and dominated as they were able to score frequently against the Warriors. Del Norte could not make baskets and trailed 17-5 by the end of the quarter.

In the second quarter it was more of the same as the Warriors semeed to be going through the motions and were unable to get going on both sides of the ball. With Del Norte down 31-15 with time running out the Loggers launched a three-pointer that went in to give them a 34-15 advantage at the half.

In the second half the Loggers extended the lead to 55-23 after three periods of play. In the fourth quarter Eureka scored another three-pointer at the buzzer to give them the 60-32 win.

Del Norte fell to 3-15 overall and 0-6 in the Big 5. Eureka improved to 9-8 overall and 3-2 in  the Big 5.

Sydney Benson finished with three points and Panhia Yang and Samantha Swinger each had two points apiece for Del Norte.

In the freshman game the Warriors hung tough, losing by only one to the Loggers 49-48. In the junior varsity contest Del Norte lost to Eureka 49-28.

Before the girls freshman game the Del Norte boys freshman team faced Brookings. The Warriors defeated the Bruins 28-26 to improve to 9-0 for the season.

Del Norte next plays on Wednesday against Fortuna in the final home game of the year.

The varsity contest begins at 7:30 p.m. The freshman game is at 4:30 p.m. and the junior varsity game begins at 6 p.m. at Thunen Gym. The season will end for the Warriors on Friday, Feb. 10, at Arcata.
