MOUNT SHASTA The Del Norte High varsity girls basketball team garnered third place at a tournament in Mount Shasta on Saturday.
The Warriors downed host Mount Shasta 30-25 on Saturday to improve to 5-5 for the season. Del Norte went 2-1 in the tournament. Thursday, the Warriors defeated River Valley 52-40 and lost to Yreka 54-38 on Friday.
Sophomore Lauryn Lesina and junior Michelle Stacey were named to the all-tournament team. Lesina and Stacey led Warrior scorers on Saturday with 10 points each.
Overall, head coach Buzz McCulloch said he was pleased with the progress his team has been making, although, he added, more work still needs to be done, especially with the Big 5 Conference season starting in January.
"The girls played better basketball and were better as a team," he said.
In the Mount Shasta game, McCulloch said his team came out a little shaky missing several easy shots in the paint, but settled down as the game went on.
Tied 7-7 at the end of the first, Del Norte took a 16-11 lead at the half and were able to maintain their lead in the second half to preserve the win.
McCulloch said while the team has improved in several facets of the game, he said the squad needs to work on making baskets in the paint.
He added the squad will be working on this during practice this week.
The Warriors next play Thursday evening on the road against Brookings.
