MOUNT SHASTA Consistent play in all facets of the game propelled the Del Norte High varsity girls basketball team to a win Thursday at a tournament in Mount Shasta.
The Warriors downed River Valley of the Yuba City area 52-40 to improve to 4-4 for the year.
"We played better as a team tonight," head coach Buzz McCulloch said. He added the team shot well from the floor, played good defense, and had a marked improvement in passing the ball around to the open girl.
Turnovers, which has been a problem early in the season, were greatly reduced with only 11 occurring in the game. In their second contest of the year, a 60-31 loss to Yreka, Del Norte had 36 turnovers.
The Warriors consistently held the advantage in the first half and had a 28-22 lead at the half.
In the third, things really started to gel and Del Norte outscored River Valley 16-14. In the majority of the fourth, McCulloch put in his bench and River Valley was able to cut the lead down.
McCulloch said he was glad to give playing time to the bench to give them experience and see who can contribute more as the season goes on for the Warriors.
Today, Del Norte faces Yreka for the second time this year at 3:30 p.m.
"We've got to come out and play tough," McCulloch said.
Sophomore Lauryn Lesina led Del Norte scorers with 15 points. Junior Natasha Short had 12, junior Lisa Daniel had seven points and senior Bailee McCulloch had six points.
