The Del Norte High boys and girls soccer teams fell on the road to McKinleyville on Wednesday.

The boys lost 4-3 and the girls were defeated 4-1.

In the boys' match, the Warriors struck very quickly with Ricky Juarez scoring 15 seconds into the start of the game.

In the 32nd minute, the Panthers scored to knot the game up at one. A short time later, Juarez got another ball into the goal to give Del Norte the 2-1 lead. Right before the end of the half, McKinleyville scored to tie things up at 2-2.

The second half did not start out well for the Warriors, when the Panthers scored again one minute in to take the 3-2 lead. A short time later, the Panthers struck again to take a 4-2 lead.

Del Norte scored one more time with a goal by Cameron Wallen. Although they lost, coach Ademona Animashaun said he was pleased with the way the team played, and said they battled throughout the game

"Everyone played well," he said. "They hustled."

Animashaun, the head coach of the Warrior JV program, is assisting the varsity squad while head coach Gilberto Gil Rodriguez is out of the area. He is expected to be back for the match on Saturday—a game against Eureka on the road. The boys are 3-3 for the year.

In the girls' game, the Warriors started off well, when in the seventh minute, Brittni Scott scored off an assist from Lauren Byers.

Head coach Clar Byers said both teams played at "a standstill," until the 23rd minute, when McKinleyville scored.

After that, the Panthers started to tack the points on the board and Del Norte found itself looking at a 4-1 deficit at the end of the first half.

In the second half, neither team scored as the game ended in a loss for Del Norte.

Byers said he was able to put almost everyone on the team in the game, which was a great way to give them game experience.

The team next plays on Saturday against Eureka on the road. The girls are 3-6 for the year.
