YREKA The Del Norte High girls varsity basketball team opened the season on a winning note, defeating Etna 36-34 at a tournament in Yreka on Thursday.
Down by five with 1:03 left in the game, the Warriors mounted a comeback.
Playing a pressing man-to-man defense, Del Norte caused a turnover and capitalized when sophomore Lauryn Lesina made two free throws.
On the next possession, Del Norte got anther turnover, and again took advantage of the charity stripe when junior Baille McCulloch drained both free throws to cut it down to one.
With about 20 seconds left, senior Robyn Suzuki hit a long-range two pointer to give the Warriors the one- point lead on the way to the two-point win.
"They didn't give up," Warrior head coach Buzz McCulloch said. "They wanted to win"
Although the girls shot well in the fourth quarter, from the free throw line that was not the case for the first three quarters. Shots from the line were not dropping in.
For the game, the Warriors went 10-for-27 from the free throw line. McCulloch said his team has to improve that stat if they want a chance of winning close games this season.
Lesina led Warrior scorers with 11 points. Suzuki and Krista Haban had five points each.
Today, the Warriors play in the winners bracket of the tournament against host Yreka at 7 p.m.
