The Daily Triplicate/Rick Postal The Del Norte Warriors junior varsity football team continued to look strong with a convincing 21-8 victory at Ferndale on Saturday to improve to 2-0.
The squad surpassed its one-game win total of last year in only the second game of the year.
“A wins a win,” head coach Nat Parrott said. “I love it.”
Despite too many penalties and turnovers, he was pleased with the way the team buckled down and earned the victory, including the defense not allowing any points in the second half.
The Warriors got on the board first despite two early turnovers and
were able to build a 13-0 advantage.
The Wildcats were able to cut the lead before the half to 13-8.
The second half was a defensive battle with both teams unable to
sustain any drives, But in the fourth quarter, the Warriors were able to
drive deep into Ferndale territory.
After a fumbled snap and another penalty pushed Del Norte back to the
Ferndale 20-yard line, the Warriors faced a fourth down with 12 yards
to go.
The Warriors went for it and quarterback Dylan Pease found tight end
Zach Taylor for a 19-yard gain. Two plays later, running back Napooi
Shorty scored. He finished with 44 yards rushing.
Jackson Evans finished with 72 yards rushing, which included a
44-yard touchdown, while Matthew Coopman added a 1-yard scoring run.
In the Warriors’ first game Sept. 2, they blanked Hidden Valley,
Ore., at home 41-0 after losing to the same school the year before 28-7.
Del Norte plays on Friday at home against Brookings-Harbor. The
contest begins at 5 p.m. at Mike Whalen Field.
