Warriors can’t get past Loggers

With first place in the Humboldt-Del Norte Big 5 League at stake on a wet football field in Eureka on Friday night, the Warriors hung tough for a half before losing to the Loggers 24-6.

The Loggers are now 3-1 overall, 3-0 in league play. The Warriors are 1-3, 1-1 in league.

For much of the first half, Del Norte’s best offense came from punter Jonathan Calderon’s well-placed kicks. The Warriors didn’t manage a first down until there were just over two minutes left in the second quarter.

For the defense, it was a first half to remember, the only slip-up being a 58-yard touchdown bomb on a third down and long situation with 4:09 left in the first quarter. Del Norte safety Steve Maready was all over the field, intercepting two passes and making tackles as well.

Maready’s second interception set up the Warriors at the Eureka 44 late in second quarter. The drive started slowly, but on third and 15, Del Norte completed a pass to set up fourth down and inches. The Warriors ran for a first down and soon after quarterback Dylan Pease hit Jordan Carpenter for a 15-yard touchdown pass with 20 seconds left in the half. A high snap doomed the extra point attempt, and Del Norte still trailed, 7-6.

Del Norte had momentum to start the second half, driving to the Eureka 25-yard-line before missing a field goal. Another long bomb set up the Loggers’ second touchdown, and it was 14-6. Carpenter, playing linebacker, was injured on the drive and spent the rest of the game on the sideline with ice on his right leg.

The Warriors then fumbled on their own 20 and Eureka capatilized with a third touchdown to go up 21-6.

Del Norte’s offense performed better in the second half, but couldn’t manage another score. The Loggers tacked on a 26-yard field goal to go up by the final score of 24-6.

In the JV game, Del Norte slaughtered the Loggers, 52-6.

Next Friday, the Warriors host Fortuna, with the varsity game starting at 7:30 p.m. and the JV game at 5 p.m.
