Wednesday was a good day for Del Norte High sports.
On adjoining soccer fields at the high school, the Warriors boys and girls soccer teams soundly defeated St. Bernards of Eureka. The girls won their game 4-1 and the boys won 5-1.
On the girls side, the win improves Del Norte to 1-3 for the year after losing three games at a tournament in Arcata last weekend. This was the first official game for the boys, who played scrimmage matches against Casa Grande and San Rafael in the Bay Area last weekend.
In the Warrior girls game, the contest went back and fourth for the first 25 minutes before St. Bernards scored. Just before the end of the half, junior Sinead Agilar passed the ball to freshman Rachael Lawrence, who scored a goal to knot things up at one.
Head coach Clar Byers said the goal was a great way to end the half and take the momentum shift with them. In the second half, Del Norte struck first when junior Lauren Byers sent a pass to Lawrence, who shot and scored her second goal of the game to give the Warriors a 2-1 lead. The next time the Warriors scored, Lawrence passed to Byers, who scored the goal to make it 3-1. With about five minute left in the game, Byers assisted senior Brittni Scott, who made it 4-1.
In the boys match, the game started more than 30 minutes late due to a lack of referees, but were finally able to find people qualified to referee. The Warriors struck quickly in the first half and took a 3-0 lead into the half. Kyler Davis, Nolan Harnden and Jeffrey Hough scored. In the second half, Davis and Harnden scored again and the game ended in a 5-1 win.
Head coach Gilberto Gil Rodriguez said he was pleased with their performance.
He said last weekend's scrimmages, when Del Norte played two top-tier teams and held their own gave them a boost.
"They know in their heart and body they can play,"
Both Warrior squads next play on Wednesday at South Fork.
