CRESCENT CITY — Newly renovated gymnasium, same old dominating Warriors.

Tuesday night, the Del Norte High varsity volleyball team opened up play at the gym for the first time since renovations were completed with a 25-19, 28-26, 25-12 victory against Fortuna.

The contest was played in front of a crowd of enthusiastic Warrior fans who cheered the team on.

Del Norte is 13-8 for the season and 2-0 in Big 5 Conference play, maintaining quite a remarkable streak alive.

Since 2005, the Warriors have not lost a Big 5 Conference game, and for 18 straight years have been champions or co-champions of the Big 5.

In the first match, Del Norte took control from the beginning and raced out to the lead, which they never let go of.

After coming as close as 8-7, Fortuna was unable to challenge Del Norte, who cruised to the game one win.

Game two was a totally different story.

Holding on to a 12-9 lead, the Warriors let Fortuna tie the game at 12.

The Huskies started to pull away, at one point taking a 14-19 lead.

Del Norte head coach Meagan Curtis said her team came out flat in the second game and committed too many serving errors and let the Huskies take control.

But, Del Norte mounted a comeback that had the crowd yelling and cheering them on, hoping for Del Norte to pull out the game two win.

Down 15-20, the Warriors scored six straight points to take the 21-20 lead.

The game kept going back and fourth, with Fortuna holding onto a 25-26 lead and the chance to get one more point for the win.

Tied 26-26, Warrior Deja Hartwick was able to get the ball over the net for a point, as members of the student section chanted "Deja, Deja, Deja."

A short time later, the Warriors got the needed point to earn the win in game two.

Curtis said she was pleased with the way the team was able to come back and do a better job passing and hitting the ball.

In the third game, the Warriors came out determined to put the game away, were sharp and leapt out to a 13-4 lead.

Nothing the Huskies did seemed to work as Del Norte racked up the points, doing a good job blocking Fortuna at the net, passing the ball and hustling.

One play that empathized the Warriors effort occurred when Jessica Morrow ran all the way to the gym wall, saved the ball and hit it to one of her teammates as the crowd gave her a warm round of applause.

The Warriors continued to put point after point on the scoreboard on the way to the 25-11 victory.

Hartwick had 21 assists, 7 kills and two blocks for kills.

Tabitha Hillman had 19 digs, Morrow had 12 digs and Mary Timoshenko had 9 digs. Ashley Owen had 14 kills and Lisa Daniels had 8 kills.

The Warriors play again at home against Arcata on Thursday.
