Fitch leads Del Norte with 17 points
The Del Norte High Warriors boys varsity basketball squad played consistent, team-oriented basketball in defeating Eureka at home Wednesday night 66-54 in Big 5 Conference action.
The young squad has struggled with consistency so far this year and lost by 19 in the Big 5 opener to McKinleyville last Friday.
It was “hands down,” the best Warriors head coach Blaine Lopez has seen his team play all year, he said.
“We played as a team and played with energy for four quarters,” he said. “It was a true team effort tonight.”
Leading the way was another strong performance by sophomore Aaron Fitch, who had 17 points.
Junior Ryland Hollins provided a key spark off the bench. He finished with 13 points, including a trio of three-pointers. Darian Simpson finished with nine points. Colby Japp had eight points and Raul Zepeda and Collin Taylor each had seven points.
Del Norte improved to 5-8 for the year and 1-1 in the Big 5. Eureka fell to 4-12 for the year.
Del Norte came out fired up from the start as they wreaked havoc on defense, getting key turnovers and rebounds on defense and making shots on offense, which has been a problem for the majority of the year.
By the end of the first quarter the Warriors had a 15-9 advantage. The Loggers battled back after trailing 30-21 with around a minute left in the half and found themselves down 30-25 after two periods of play.
In the third quarter Del Norte held steady and led 45-36. In the final quarter the Warriors did enough to pull away for good and win by 12 points.
In the junior varsity game, Del Norte lost 45-41 and won 51-37 in the freshman game.
Del Norte will next play on homecoming night in Crescent City next Wednesday against Fortuna.
Orignally, both the boys and girls teams were set to play at Hoopa on Saturday. Those games have just been mutually called off, Lopez said.
and will not be made up, Lopez said.
