The Arcata High boys basketball team was playing at home — with Senior Night stirring emotions — for a share of the Humboldt-Del Norte Big 5 League championship.
Try as it might, the Del Norte High boys basketball team only stood in the Tigers’ way for so long.
Arcata roared out to a 36-17 halftime lead en route to a 64-39 victory, clinching a 7-1 HDN Big 5 record (19-5 overall) and a share of the league title with Fortuna High.
Del Norte finished with a 7-13 overall record and a 2-6 HDN Big 5 record, good for fourth place in the league. The Warriors also helped the Huskies clinch their share of the league title, losing to Fortuna on Tuesday night.
Del Norte took an early 6-3 lead in the first quarter before Arcata’s athleticism and size overwhelmed the Warriors to the tune of a 28-4 run over more than 10 minutes.
Del Norte made a run of its own in the third quarter, cutting the lead to 42-28 on a Dylan Pease three-pointer, but the Tigers stretched the lead back out with an eight-point run to open the fourth quarter.
Sophomore Brandon Japp led the Warriors with seven points off the bench, all coming in the third quarter. Steven Maready, Pease and Sean DeArman each contributed six points toward Del Norte’s effort.
Arcata’s varsity victory capped off a Tigers sweep on the night. The Arcata junior varsity squad defeated Del Norte, 76-47. The Warriors’ freshman team lost its bid for a share of the HDN Big 5 freshman title, falling 48-30 to the Tigers.
The Del Norte freshmen finished their season with an 11-5 overall record and a 6-2 HDN Big 5 record. The Del Norte junior varsity ended its season 6-16 overall (1-7 HDN Big 5).
