Warriors go 1-1 at tournament

Del Norte  baseball team up in Redding

It was a mixed bag for the Del Norte High baseball team on Wednesday as they split  their games at a tournament in Redding.

In the first contest the Warriors crushed University Prep 12-1 in five innings.

In the second game, several errors led to an 8-4 loss to Enterprise despite an eight strikeout performance by Layton O’Reilley.

Orignally, the Warriors were scheduled to face Chico and Burney.

While the team practiced to face Chico they were told by officials things had changed and they were playing another team at another field.

“When we got here we had no clue of the change,” head coach Pablo Lorenzi said.

This was due to another squad, ironically, fellow Big 5 Conference opponent Arcata, joining the tournament as an additional last-minute addition.

Because of this, the Warriors faced University Prep first and cruised to the 11-run victory.

The Warriors’ bats were hot from the start and drove in six runs in the second inning and five runs in the third, along with strong pitching.

T.J. Scott threw three innings, with four strikeouts and no hits.

Travis Stacey pitched the final two innings, striking out five batters and giving up two hits and one run.

Stacey drove in two runs and Ryan Hollins had two hits. O’Reilley finished with two doubles.

“We played good, basic baseball,” Lorenzi said.

In the second game errors played a key part in the loss, Lorenzi said, with  Del Norte committing five errors.

“We played a good team and every error we had they capitalized and scored a run,” Lorenzi said.

O’Reilley did his part, pitching five innings, striking out eight and giving up zero runs and four hits.

Hollins had another strong game, going 3-for-4 with two runs.

Del Norte is now 5-3 for the year.

The Warriors play Willows today at 10:30 a.m. The tournament concludes on Friday.
