The Del Norte football team was the first sport to get its season underway for the 2014-15 school year as the freshman, junior varsity and varsity football teams got back on the gridiron for joint-team practices during two-a-days.
Head coach Ray Rook said these early practices are all about “getting things up and running,” as they explain the drills and concepts to new players and refresh the memories of returners.
“There is a lot of yelling and screaming going on today,” Rook said.
The seniors and the returning varsity players are getting their first chance to show the younger players the ropes, as many veterans demonstrated drills and explained concepts.
Del Norte will run two practices every day for the first two weeks of the season before it begins preparation for its first game of the season scheduled for Aug. 30 at home against Piner.
The Warriors finished last season with a 6-7 overall record. That group will likely be remembered more for its gutsy run to the semifinals of the North Coast Section Division 4 playoffs, where they lost to Humboldt-Del Norte Big 5 league champion and eventual NCS runner-up Fortuna in a tight 21-20 loss.
