The Warriors traveled to Fortuna, the site of the team’s first meet of the season. The Del Norte runners turned in much faster times than they ran back on Sept. 25.
“Across the board we had big improvement, so time-wise, we have improved this season,” said head coach Kirk Burrows.
The Warrior girls came in third with 69 points. Seniors Guadalupe Gonzalez and Sabrina Bustamante were the team’s fastest runners. Gonzalez finished 11th overall in a time of 23:24 and Bustamante was 16th in 24:43.
“Our seniors, Guadalupe and Sabrina, did a great job,” Burrows said. “They had great leadership this year and they work hard. The young girls will get to come back next year.”
The freshmen led the way once again for the boys. Parker Thompson ran a time of 19:53 for a 20th place finish. Thompson edged out Garrett Galea by 12 seconds. Galea was 21st.
“We are really young,” Burrows said of the boys. “Our first two runners were freshmen. If we had run them in the JV race they would have had a chance to win it, but we tried to get a varsity team and they competed well. I think that is a good thing for next year. They kind of know where they need to be and we will be able to work a little harder.”
The boys team has two juniors, one sophomore and three freshmen who can return next season.
Overall, Burrows believes the 2013 cross country season was a success for the Warriors.
“They were a great bunch of kids,” Burrows said. “They came to practice every day and worked hard. I am looking forward to having these young kids back next year.”
