Hitting is infectious, and the Del Norte High softball team has caught the bug on the cusp of the Humboldt-Del Norte League season.

The Warriors went 4-1-1 over six games, capturing third place at the Yreka High School Tournament in Yreka on Friday and Saturday. Del Norte’s bats came alive in boosting the team’s record to 4-7-1 on the season.

In the first game of pool play Friday, the Warriors finished in a 4-4 tie with Hoopa High after five innings.

Ashton Smedley went 3 for 3 with three singles for Del Norte, and Camryn Ridgley contributed a double, a single and two RBI.

The Warriors picked up their first win of the season later in the day, shutting out Trinity High of Weaverville, 2-0.

Cortney Penner went 2 for 3 with a triple in the game, also scoring one of the Del Norte runs.

The Warriors’ third opponent of the day, Etna High, was up for the challenge in a back-and-forth contest. Ultimately, Del Norte scored two runs in the fifth inning to break a tie and shut the Lions down in the final two innings for a 5-3 victory.

Colleen Markussen went 2 for 3 with two doubles and a run batted in for the Warriors. BreAnna Moore also doubled and scored a run.

Bracket play picked up in earnest on Saturday, and Del Norte wasted no time advancing a round against Mt. Shasta High. The Warriors used a nine-run third inning to finish off the Bears, 10-0, in five innings.

The offensive fireworks continued as Del Norte scored seven runs in the first two innings against Tulelake High, defeating the Honkers 11-1.

Markussen hit a solo home run in the seventh inning, the first by a Warriors player this season. She finished her 3-for-3 day with a walk, a single, and a double, in addition to her solo shot.

Moore went 2 for 4 with a single and a double, and Ridgley scored two runs on a 2-for-3 performance.

Del Norte’s tournament run came to an end at the hands of host Yreka High.

A familiar bugaboo from earlier this season haunted the Warriors: The Miners scored two runs in the top of the first inning, and Del Norte was slow to respond en route to a 2-1 Yreka victory.

The Warriors begin HDN League play on Wednesday, April 17, when Fortuna High brings its team to Crescent City.
